following sections show the necessary configuration steps on the Debian server to get the Samba Server up and running.\u00a0Then the created share can be mounted via a Linux-based or Windows-based client.<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Installation_of_the_Samba_service\"><\/span><span id=\"Installation_des_Samba_Dienstes\" class=\"mw-headline\">Installation of the Samba service<\/span><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>The\u00a0installation of the Samba service\u00a0and basic\u00a0configuration\u00a0is similar to the article\u00a0Simple Samba release under Debian\u00a0.<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"User-limited_configuration\"><\/span><span id=\"Benutzereingeschr.C3.A4nkte_Konfiguration\" class=\"mw-headline\">User-limited configuration<\/span><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>This configuration example now shows how to make an\u00a0<b>SMB share with authentication<\/b>\u00a0.\u00a0For this, a user\u00a0<i>smbuser is created<\/i>\u00a0on the Debian system and\u00a0a share entry\u00a0<i>restricted is<\/i>\u00a0added\u00a0to the configuration file\u00a0<i>smb.conf<\/i>\u00a0.<i><\/i><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Creating SMB users, further information can be found in the Wiki article\u00a0Samba-Server Security\u00a0in the\u00a0User\u00a0Access\u00a0section\u00a0.\n<dl>\n<dd>\n<div class=\"mw-highlight mw-content-ltr\" dir=\"ltr\">\n<pre>$ sudo useradd -s \/ bin \/ false = no\r\nguest ok = no\r\ncreate mask = 0600\r\ndirectory mask = 0700\r\n<\/pre>\n<p>This configuration uses the sample mountpoint\u00a0<i>\/ media \/ storage2<\/i>\u00a0.\u00a0To restrict access to the share as much as possible, this mountpoint\u00a0<i>\/ media \/ storage2 is<\/i>assigned to the user\u00a0<i>smbuser<\/i>\u00a0and provided with the directory rights 700 so that only this user (and of course root) receives read and write access.<\/p>\n<dl>\n<dd>\n<div class=\"mw-highlight mw-content-ltr\" dir=\"ltr\">\n<pre>$ sudo chown -R smbuser: smbuser \/ media \/ storage2\r\n<\/pre>\n<\/div>\n<\/dd>\n<dd>\n<div class=\"mw-highlight mw-content-ltr\" dir=\"ltr\">\n<pre>$ sudo chmod <span class=\"m\">700<\/span> \/ media \/ storage2\r\n<\/pre>\n<\/div>\n<\/dd>\n<\/dl>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Restart_of_Samba\"><\/span><span id=\"Neustart_von_Samba\" class=\"mw-headline\">Restart of Samba<\/span><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>For the configuration to take effect, you must restart the Samba service.\u00a0This is done on Debian 8 with\u00a0<i>systemd<\/i>\u00a0.<\/p>\n<dl>\n<dd>\n<div class=\"mw-highlight mw-content-ltr\" dir=\"ltr\">\n<pre>$ sudo systemctl restart smbd.service\r\n<\/pre>\n<\/div>\n<\/dd>\n<\/dl>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Mount_the_shares\"><\/span><span id=\"Mounten_der_Freigaben\" class=\"mw-headline\">Mount the shares<\/span><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Now that the Samba server has been completely configured and restarted, the created share can now be used by clients.\u00a0This is explained using an Ubuntu 16.04 and a Windows 10 client in the following sections.<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"On_a_Linux_based_client\"><\/span><span id=\"An_einem_Linux-basierten_Client\" class=\"mw-headline\">On a Linux based client<\/span><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>All current Debian-based Linux distributions use the\u00a0<b>cifs-utils<\/b>\u00a0package\u00a0.\u00a0Until\u00a0Ubuntu\u00a012.04\u00a0including\u00a0the old package\u00a0<b>smbfs<\/b>\u00a0could be used.<sup id=\"cite_ref-1\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup><\/p>\n<dl>\n<dd>\n<div class=\"mw-highlight mw-content-ltr\" dir=\"ltr\">\n<pre>$ apt-get install cifs-utils\r\n<\/pre>\n<\/div>\n<\/dd>\n<\/dl>\n<p>The Samba user\u00a0<i>smbuser<\/i>\u00a0configured on the Debian system is\u00a0used and the password is queried.<\/p>\n<pre>$ sudo mount -t cifs \/\/ &lt;IP-of-Samba-Server&gt; \/ restricted \/ media \/ tniedermeier \/ test -o user = smbuser\r\nPassword for smbuser @ \/\/ &lt;IP-the-Samba-Server&gt; \/ restricted: ********\r\n<\/pre>\n<p>For more information about mounted shares, use Windows 10 client<\/span><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>The share can be connected to a Windows 10 client as explained in the following section.\u00a0There are several ways to connect.<\/p>\n<p>From the command prompt you can connect the network drive with the following command:<sup id=\"cite_ref-2\"
